Spirit of the Silk Road

The Ancient Silk Road was a trading route between Europe and China.  In its heyday, the Silk Road made Central Asia the crossroads of the world as traders, scholars, missionaries and adventurers crossed the deserts of Arabia, Persia and the Karakum to embark on an early but sophisticated form of globalisation.  The legacy today is some of the finest art and architecture in the world.

In July 2006 I had the privilege of travelling along parts of the Ancient Silk Road in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, and parts of the Gulf region.  Even today, the region is a melting pot of Islam, Christianity, Judaism and Zoroastrianism.  This gallery of 99 images is a small taste of that great experience!

A daily diary of my travels can be seen HERE.
