Houston Blog
My blog from Houston, Texas. Updated most weeks, usually on Sundays.
Over the past couple of years, it has become a tradition at Awty to have regular State of the School addresses. These began as public sessions where board members and senior management shared information with faculty, staff and parents relating to initiatives and ongoing progress within the School. I did my first State of the School address at Awty at the end of November last year, and the next was scheduled for last Monday.
I began this week’s State of the School address by sharing some statistics which compared Awty to other comparable schools (in most cases, the comparison was to the statistics for all independent schools in the US), and I then proceeded to outline some current, recent, and future initiatives which are the focus of our work at the moment. Four of my colleagues then gave short presentations on some specific initiatives that are underway - Don Davis gave an update on our building and master plan progress, Kristi Winegarden spoke about our new Sustainability Initiative, and then Gwen Bergman and Greg Walsh spoke about our universities and colleges acceptances. I concluded the State of the School address by providing a progress report on the development of our new Strategic Plan.

State of the School Address

One of my enjoyable duties last week was being interviewed in my office by Diego, a 5th Grade student in the Dutch Language program, for his class assignment. (Thanks to Diego’s Dutch Language teacher, Ms Candace Huijgen, for the photo)
