The Lights of Hong Kong
The Lights of Hong Kong
Sunday, 9 December 2007
There is only one week to go before we enjoy our three week winter break. During the three week holiday, most of our students will return home to spend time with their families, although a significant number will also use the opportunity to travel through various parts of Asia or perform voluntary service work in several nearby schools in Mainland China.
For our students in both 1st and 2nd Years, the workload is probably a little lighter than usual at the moment because the assessment season for this term is largely over. For the teachers, however, the days and evenings are extremely hectic with report writing. It is perhaps all the more remarkable, therefore, that a full range of events is still in full swing at the College. This weekend, a group of students has gone camping at a beach in Sai Kung Country Park. Yesterday afternoon, there was a student-organised singing competition in the Courtyard. On three nights this week, the United World Theatre group gave thoroughly enjoyable performances of Stan Lai’s play “Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land” to great audience acclaim.
On Wednesday evening this week, our students had a night off from regular routines with block outings. Each of the four residential blocks went in a different direction. While other blocks went ten-pin bowling or to a beach, Block 4 (where I work as a tutor) went on a three hour cruise on a small boat (called a ‘junk’ in Hong Kong) on the Harbour to admire the Christmas lights. Hong Kong’s buildings are famous for their lights all year, but the Christmas and New Year periods see particularly spectacular displays. Our cruise also enabled us to view the nightly lights and laser show from the water, enabling us to take in the displays on both sides of the Harbour.
The cruise was enjoyed by everyone - even the substantial number of students with weak stomachs who were sea-sick on the boat. The lights were a visible reminder to all of us that our well-earned holidays will soon be upon us!
