Scientific Solutions for the Green Revolution
Scientific Solutions for the Green Revolution
The theme for this year’s exhibition was ‘Scientific Solutions for the Green Revolution”, and not unexpectedly there was a strong environmental theme in many of the projects on display. The LPCUWC project, for example, focussed on the environmental consequences of cigarette smoking (a link to the project’s summary can be seen HERE). I was also particularly impressed with an especially creative project presented by students from the SKH Bishop Mok Sau Tseng Secondary School which proposed using the resonance of sound waves to clear up air pollution in large outdoor areas such as Victoria Harbour (see details HERE).
My attendance involved more than simply admiring the innovative ideas by students from many schools; I was a member of the official panel of five guests invited to present the awards on stage. I felt humbled by the company I shared on the stage - (get ready for some serious name dropping)...
- Mr Edward Yau Tan-Wah (Hong Kong Secretary for the Environment)
- Professor Sun Kwok (Dean of the Faculty of Science, University of Hong Kong)
- Mr Wong Hing Lan (Chief Curator of the Hong Kong Science Museum)
- Mr Lau Yuen Tang (Chief Curriculum Development Officer in Science at the Education Bureau).
I really enjoyed my very different conversations with each of the other official guests, ranging from dinosaurs, plate tectonics and global axis shift with Mr Wong, approaches to educating young primary-aged children in abstract concepts and global warming with Mr Yau, and the challenges of Hong Kong’s educational reforms with Mr Lau.
The 40th Joint Schools Science Exhibition continues until 30th August in the Exhibition Hall at Hong Kong Central Library (weblink HERE). If you live in Hong Kong, I would really encourage you to call in and admire the great work done by students of all ages from Hong Kong, China, Hungary, Taiwan and Thailand - and of course by LPCUWC students such as James and Clara.
