The GCAT Fundraiser
The GCAT Fundraiser
Sunday, 22 March 2009
One of the great joys of my job is supervising GCAT, the Global Concerns Action Team. Dedicated to taking action in ways that genuinely address issues of global concern, GCAT has grown from its tiny beginnings in 2004 to become the largest service and co-curricular group in Li Po Chun United World College.
GCAT re-evaluates its focus priorities each year, but at the moment it has several project teams that work through NGOs in support of five priority areas: (a) victims of discrimination because of leprosy, (b) orphans in Cambodia, (c) providing medical clinics in rural areas of Guizhou, China, (d) victims of human trafficking in Cambodia, and (e) providing educational scholarships for children of minority ethnic groups in China.
In support of its work, GCAT held its first fundraising extravaganza evening last night. And what a night it was! Entirely organised by the students in GCAT and supported by many other students in the College, the evening raised almost enough money to provide a new medical clinic in Guizhou - we need $50,000 to achieve this goal and the students raised almost $45,000. We are hoping that continuing wine sales in the next few weeks might enable the students to reach their target, however.
Thanks are due to the organisers of the evening (especially GCAT’s Chairman this year, Marius Larsen), to all those who performed in support of GCAT, those who generously donated items for the auction, those who came to the evening, and of course those who generously made donations.
