Mass Gymnastics - Arirang

In August 2008, I accompanied a group of 16 students from Li Po Chun United World College in Hong Kong to North Korea (or as it is officially known, the DPRK - Democratic People’s Republic of Korea).  One highlight of the trip was attending the mass gymnastics (also called ‘mass games’) display called “Arirang”.  "Arirang" is a popular song in both North and South Korea that focusses on the heartbreak caused when loved ones are separated.  It was held in Pyongyang’s May Day stadium, the largest stadium in the world.  As you will see in these pictures, it was visually stunning.  The scale of the real thing, with its music and movement, made it unforgettable.  Click on any image to enlarge.
