Houston Blog
My blog from Houston, Texas. Updated most weeks, usually on Sundays.
I am constantly discovering new reasons to be proud of my students at Awty. I had yet another such experience last Tuesday when we held an assembly for Upper School students to remember the life, work and philosophy of Martin Luther King Jr.
Having experienced, and enjoyed, my first Martin Luther King Day holiday on Monday, I was thrilled that as a school, we followed up this important celebration on Tuesday morning with a special assembly to commemorate King’s legacy. I found it to be a deeply moving affair.
In a blog that I read online last Monday, I saw a comment that “Martin Luther King, Jr has been reduced to an abstract part of our nation’s history, remembered as a caricature or, worse, an excuse for a holiday, as if he lived hundreds of years ago.” At Awty, we recognized that Martin Luther King Jr is very much a man of our time, whose profound outlook speaks loudly and eloquently to the issues of our day.
His words are not quaint platitudes; they are a vision of what our world could be and should be. Indeed, I believe that his words are one of America’s great gifts to the world. With that in mind, I refer you to a website that has repeatedly been a focus of my thinking this week; called “The Smartest and Best Things Dr. Martin Luther King Ever Said — 58 quotes worth reading”, the URL is http://networkedblogs.com/sNXNE.
I felt that I was a better person for having reflected on King’s insights and experienced our assembly on Tuesday. I hope that our students felt similarly enriched.
