Exploring Southern Ethiopia
Exploring Southern Ethiopia
Monday, 16 June 2008
I feel that I should share one very special image with you in this blog (see right - click image to enlarge). On the afternoon of Friday 13th June, Andrew and I were walking along the main street of Jinka in the far south-west of Ethiopia, when we came to this sign. In Ethiopia’s Amharic language, the lower (white on blue) part of the sign says “Education for All”. The top (black on white) section reads “I am proud to be a teacher”. I thought that seemed worthy of a photograph. The sign is obviously so precious that is surrounded by secure barbed wire - paradoxically, it is far more secure than the barbed wire fence surrounding the nearby airstrip runway. It is wonderful to find a place where education is so highly valued.
Rather than trying to summarise the range of extraordinary experiences that Andrew and I have shared this week, may I invite you to read my daily travel diary entries for the trip, which can be accessed HERE.
I am not sure when the next daily travel diary entries will be uploaded because access to the internet (and even electricity) is so difficult in the areas where we are travelling. I can only encourage you to check back here often!
