Helping earthquake victims
Helping earthquake victims

Yes, we are approaching the final week of the academic year. And yes, all our students have been involved in end-of-year exams this week - in the case of our final year year students, doing their IB examinations. But that didn’t stop a group of our students taking time out last weekend to support a fundraising dinner held by the Amity Foundation.
The College has a special relationship with the Amity Foundation, as it is the NGO that the Global Concerns Action Team (GCAT) works with in its project to provide medical clinics to poor, rural communities in Guizhou province.
However, the focus this time was different. The event was a fundraising dinner to support victims of last year’s earthquake in Sichuan, and our students were invited to provide some performances to add a multicultural feel to the evening. We had originally proposed including our Chinese Dragon Dance among the performances, but unfortunately the dinner venue did not have enough space for this. Therefore, we provided three types of performances - a traditional Cambodian dance (by Chansoknea, from Cambodia); some Latin American dances (by Pedro [Nicaragua], Alejandro [Paraguay], Rebecca [United States] and Anastasiya [Latvia]) and a South Asian dance (by Rigzom [Bhutan], Neto [East Timor], Junius [Indonesia] and Mona [Yemen]).
A highlight of the evening was the performance towards the end by the band “Only on Weekdays”, the members of which are retired senior civil servants, with the lead singer being Mr Anthony Tong, the Chairman of the LPCUWC Board. Some additional information about the dinner, together with photos and video clips (including of our dancers and the band) can be seen at http://www.amityfoundation.org/wordpress/.
