From Houston

to Sydney

2013

It is not easy to make a ‘doing odds and ends’ day in Houston sound very exciting.  Di went to the dentist, I went to the bank and fixed up some problems with AT&T’s closure of our telephone and internet account, we both went to the supermarket and the pharmacy … I’m sure you get the general idea.

Actually, there were some noteworthy highlights.  Breakfast at the Houstonian was the first of them; this was without doubt the best breakfast I have enjoyed on this trip.  I had a healthy breakfast of blueberries and almonds, overlain by a huge waffle, accompanied by good coffee.  Di had a beautiful, freshly cooked omelette accompanied by gluten-free bread.  I wish I had taken a photo of it all to share with you, but I was too focused on eating.

Later in the day, after we had finished our various supermarket and pharmacy visits, we had a lovely time catching up with Lisa Darling over afternoon tea, also at the Houstonian.  Lisa will be my successor as Interim Head at The Awty International School, and as we are both former heads of United World Colleges (Lisa in the US, I in Hong Kong), we have known each other through many meetings over a period of about eight years.  It was a great delight to catch up and share reminiscences, both observing with smiles on our faces that as our paths have crossed in so many disparate ways over the years, how small the world of international education seems to be.
