Scotland and Faroe Islands Travel Diary 2023

Having collected a rental car on arrival at Edinburgh Airport the day previously, we used our first full day in Scotland to drive out of Scotland into England and then back again.  Our main intermediate destination was Lindisfarne, or Holy Island as it is also known.    Holy Island was the site of Lindisfarne Priory, one of the first strongholds of Christianity in Britain when it was founded in 635 by St Aidan.  It was attacked by Norwegian Vikings in 793, and of course only the ruins remain today.  Weather conditions were disappointingly grey and overcast, but this is Scotland after all.  From Lindisfarne we travelled north back into Scotland to our destination for the day, the town of Dunbar.  Located on a very rugged section of the coastline overlooking the Firth of Forth, the main sight in Dunbar was the old port with the ruins of the castle overlooking the harbour.
