Rather than taking the faster drive via Aberdeen, we chose to drive using the more scenic route through the Cairngorms. Our first stop was the historic port, university and cathedral city of St Andrews, centre of a region of seemingly countless golf courses. After a walk around the old part of the city, we proceeded northwards through Braemar, Granton-on-Spey and Ballindalloch to our destination of Elgin. We were very impressed with Elgin, having found a wonderful guesthouse within walking distance to the old cathedral ruins. We also spent some time exploring a ‘surprise find’, the Biblical gardens beside the cathedral which featured plants inspired by Biblical verses and stories - quite a magical place in the golden sunlight of the late evening.
